  • 12.Growing up,I was often the first Jewish person my classmates had ever met.I lived in Mississauga,Ontario, and was the only Jewish student in my grade—sometimes the only one in the whole school. This difference set me apart.
Every September,I hated presenting the note my parents had expertly made to a teacher I was just getting to know. The note explained that I would be absent during the Jewish High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.I flatted that my teachers would label me the "Jewish kid".
The real trouble always came as the local new year's festival approached.I was Jewish and celebrated Hanukkah, not this festival. At school,on one day before the winter break, every class would sit in neat rows in the gym and sing songs from the festival. However, the music teacher sometimes played Dreidel,Dreidel,Dreidel,a Jewish festival song, and I would feel hundreds of eyes staring at my red cheeks. As my friends counted down the days until the festival,I counted the days until it was over and I could go back to feeling normal.
Each year during primary school,my mother would coordinate(協(xié)調(diào))with my teacher to come to my class and tell the story of Hanukkah. She would prepare treats and materials depending on my age.Every time I would proudly stand beside her as she told the story of Hanukkah and explained the symbols. The children who had attended the presentation previously competed to answer questions. After my mom left,I would overhear them showing off their fried treats to kids in other classes.
My mom's annual visits to my school sparked(激發(fā))interest from other parents as well.Over the years,we had visits from parents who shared how festivals were celebrated in Germany and Italy.
My mom showed me,my classmates and their families that what sets us apart should be celebrated and shared,an intention which I continue to set for myself as I cycle through another holiday season.

  • 14.I study English literature at university and have always been proud of Britain's literary heritage(文學(xué)遺產(chǎn)).Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK,their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are "classic" because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past.Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen's fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories land interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up,his character changes:he becomes quite selfish and mean.Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiancé ran away on their wedding day.She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.

  • 15.Anyone can book a trip, but not everyone can plan the best adventure that is affordable and fun.If you want to do it better, the places to stay in for the nights must be chosen carefully. (1)
    .
Check distances on a map. It's common for hotels to slightly exaggerate(夸大) their closeness to attractions around town. They will not tell you the true distance. If being close to a particular airport is important for your trip, you' d better confirm the distance on Google Map before you book a hotel.
       (2)
.A little niceness goes a long way, especially with the hotel staff who have to deal with difficult guests on a regular basis. When you check in,simply say hello to the cleaning staff when you pass them in the hall. This is not only common politeness, but it also increases your chances of getting incidental benefit during your stay.
Give up the package deals(套餐).To appeal to new guests, some hotels will offer themed package deals.(3)
.Sometimes these packages include things you don' t want or need and the special prices could be higher than the regular ones.
       Ask about parking. (4)
.You'd better look for a hotel offering free parking. If you have to afford the expensive parking, apps like Best Parking can help you find nearby parking lots at lower prices. As parking costs really go up,if not necessary,we suggest you take a taxi or a bus from the hotel to travel around the city rather than travel in your own car.(5)
    .

    A.Be polite to the staff.
    B.Pay attention to difficult guests.
C.They are quite cheap but taste bad.
D .In this way you can save much money.
    E.In a self-driving travel,parking may cost a lot.
