  • 11.There is an old joke among pilots that says the ideal flight crew is a computer,a pilot and a dog.The computer's job is to fly the plane. The pilot is there to feed the dog.And the dog's job is to bite the pilot if he tries to touch the computer.
Handing complex tasks to computers is not new.But recent progress in machine learning,a subfield of artificial intelligence (AI),has enabled computers to handle many problems which were previously beyond jye.aim.The result has been an AI boom, with computers moving into everything from medical diagnosis and insurance to self-driving cars.
There is a problem, though.Machine learning works by giving computers the ability to train themselves, which adapts their programming to the task at hand.People struggle to understand exactly how those self-written programs do what they do.When algorithms(計算機程序)are doing small tasks, such as playing chess or recommending a film to watch, this "black box" problem can be safely ignored. When they are deciding who gets a loan,or how to drive a car through a crowded city,it is potentially harmful. And when things go wrong, then customers, regulators and the courts will want to know why.
For some people this is a reason to hold back AL France's digital-economy minister,Mounir Mahjoubi, has said that the government should not use any algorithm whose decisions cannot be explained. But that is an overreaction. The difficulties caused by clever computers are not unheard- of.Society already has plenty of experience dealing with problematic black boxes;the most common are called human beings, who can't even figure out what's going on in a brajye.ai.In response to the weakness in humans, society has evolved a series of workable coping mechanisms, called laws, rules and regulations. Many of these can be applied to machines as well.
Humans have worked with computers on complex tasks for decades. One lesson from such applications is that, wherever possible, people should supervise(監(jiān)督)the machjye.aies.In that joke, pilots are vital in case something happens that is beyond the scope of artificial intelligence. As computers spread, companies and governments should ensure the first line of defence is a real person who can overrule the algorithms if necessary.

(1)Why is the joke mentioned in Paragraph 1?

    A.To make people laugh.
    B.To foresee future aeroplane industry.
C.To introduce the latest model of aeroplanes.
D.To raise people's awareness of computers performing complex tasks.
(2)What has caused the increasing application of computers in various fields?

    A.The shortage of labor force.
    B.The rise of artificial intelligence.
    C.The encouragement of government.
    D.The development of medical economy.
(3)Why are some people opposed to AI?

    A.Black boxes always go wrong.
    B.Laws forbid machine learning.
C.They don't understand how AI works.
D.Computers are trying to replace human beings.

  • 12.When I was young,my grandparents bought a second home in Arkansas and would bring me there every single summer.Their home was located on a 3 acre patch(小片)of land at the end of a stony road through a small forest. There were yards around the house and I would spend a lot of time outside there following my grandfather while he did yard work.Down the road in the valley was Bull Shoals Lake, the "swimming hole" where we would swim almost every afternoon.
I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds(蜂鳥)were at the feeders(取食槽)so that I could watch them.My grandfather took the time to teach me the names of all the different trees in the yard.I would search around in the yard by myself sometimes to look for interesting rocks to add to my collection, and if I was lucky I would find a turtle(烏龜).If I did find a turtle I would go get my grandfather so that he could pick it up and put it in the kiddy pool for me to observe for a few minutes.I was always amazed by these creatures. After I finished observing the turtle,my grandfather would pick it back up and return it to the bush I found it in.I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and crawled back under.
I always felt very much at peace at my grandparents' home.It was quiet and full of interesting natural things I had never seen before.Whenever I get lost in the lights and noises in this forest of cement(水泥)high—rises, the memories will calm me down and make me smile.

(1)What does the first paragraph focus on about the grandparents' home?

    A.The small size.
    B.The natural environment.
    C.The various activities.
    D.The hard traffic condition.
(2)What did they often do when they saw animals in the yard?

    A.Feeding.
    B.Saying hello.
    C.Observing.
    D.Taking pictures.
(3)Which of the following may be the writer's most impressive memory?

    A.The feeling of peace.
    B.Relationship with animals.
    C.Exploration in the forest.
    D.Grandparents' selfless love.
(4)What can we infer about the writer from the text?

A.He often got lost in the forest.
B.He grew up with his grandparents.
C.He is now living in a big city.
D.He feels sad that the forest is gone.

       ◆Set a reading goal
It is interesting that I read the books borrowed from libraries faster than those I bought. The reason is the books I bought don't have a due date!I don't need to return those books.Having a reading goal helps you work out how much reading you need to do in a week or even a day. Before you read each book, ask yourself what time you need to complete this book by.

第二節(jié)(共1小題;每小題2.5分,滿分12.5分)

  • 15.One of the things I want to plan well this year is how to manage my weight during the holidays.Because, let's face it,the next few weeks are some of the toughest weeks of the year when it comes to eating well.(1)
?If so,join me in taking these four steps to better health, less guilt and more peace of mind.
       (2)

Yes,Thanksgiving,Hanukkah and Christmas provide a lot of opportunities to eat at family dinners, parties, church events, shopping trips, and many others. But those events don't happen every day-many days between now and New Year's Day are normal work, school and family days.So don't let every day become a "holiday eating event" and try to manage your weight.
Eat the holiday foods you really love, and avoid the ones you don't
Everyone has favorite holiday foods.Three of mine are pumpkin pie and ginger cookies and sweet potatoes.Maybe for you it's your mother's Christmas cookies, your neighbor's homemade candy,or your special coconut cake.So enjoy those foods, the ones that make the holidays special for you.But many holiday foods don't hold a special place in your heart. And some of them are worthless junk that doesn't deserve to be eaten. (3)
    .
       Move your body every day
Regular physical activity helps you deal with some of the downsides of the holiday season, including worry, fatigue, the "blues",and too many calories. (4)
.At this busiest time of the year, you'll think you don't have time for it.But make time-it's worth it.
Drink lots of water and eat real food most of the time
Carry water with you wherever you go,and keep a bottle or glass handy at home or work.If you don't like plain water, make fruit waters. (5)
.When you're not enjoying your favorite holiday foods, eat primarily fruits, vegetables, lean protein, nuts, whole grains, and healthy fats.

    A.So avoid those foods
B.Are you trying to keep a balanced diet
C.And eat as much real food as possible
D.Are you looking for a way to manage your weight too
E.Time permitting,I do hope to taste different kinds of food
